The Cause of Addiction

The cause of addiction is a topic that has been researched through scientific means since the conception of modern technology, i.e. early 1900’s. Throughout the years many theories have come and gone with advancements in medical technology. The following are a handful of theories pertaining to the manifestation of this insidious disease: peer influence, cultural influence, certain coexisting psychiatric conditions, Availability, and Occupation. Another major factor is related to cultural perception of alcohol consumption. Those cultures that foster the consumption of low-proof alcoholic beverages within social and spiritual venues and also have a strong taboo against severe intoxication enjoy relatively low alcoholism rates (e.g. Italy and Israel). In contrast, Cultures that lack traditions that involve consumption of low-proof alcohol, and tolerate heavy drinking at the same time are prone to higher rates of alcoholism (i.e. America and Ireland). The genetic link of this disease has been the subject of extensive medical research. Studies with twin children and an adoptee support the conclusion that alcoholism can be inherited. “At present there is no evidence that this predisposition depends upon a single gene. Rather, there are probably a large number of genes, each with rather small individual effects that affect the risk of developing alcoholism.”(Causes of alcoholism, paragraph 3). The preceding information was provided by Britannica.
