Health Risks Pertaining to Addiction

The following is a list of commonly used drugs and the health hazards associated with their consumption: Alcohol - Consumption of alcohol severely affects the brain; it alters the cerebral cortex, which is responsible for higher levels of thinking (logic, interpretation of language, etc.), the hippocampus, which is responsible for memory and learning, and the cerebellum, which is the body’s balance system. Marijuana - This is the most commonly abused substance. It impairs short term memory as well as learning, attention span, coordination, produces increased heart rate, can inflict damage to lungs, and can induce psychosis in consumers prone to it. Cocaine - A short lasting stimulant, which can lead a user to go on a “cocaine binge.” Opiates - A powerful sedative that can slow down the respiration process and increase the risk of infectious diseases. The consumer is highly at risk when taken intravenously.
